50% Local food club

Meeting Nova Scotia Food Producers Halfway – Est. September 2014

Home

Welcome to the 50% Local Food Club, a month-long initiative to increase consumption and purchasing of local foods in Nova Scotia. Why? To support our food producers and farmers, strengthen the local food movement in our province, and simply celebrate food. The 50% Local Food Club provides participants with the resources, support and inspiration necessary to incorporate 50% local food into their diet, and at the same time, connect them with other community members who share a passion for great tasting food.

By registering, the participant will commit to sourcing at least 50% of his/her diet from local foods for the month of September. By committing to eat 50% locally, we put money into the pockets of our local producers and enjoy the delicious bounty of food grown in our province – everyone eats and everyone wins!

You can register to participate as an individual, family, group or business: Click here to join the club!

This website is a wealth of information – you will find local food retailers and restaurants, nearby activities and events, as well as an opportunity to connect with other members of the 50% Local Food Club.

Join the conversation about local food in Nova Scotia using #LocalFoodClub. Get engaged and stay engaged by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

    • Hi Catherine – thanks for your question! We recommend joining as one big family, and then listing your family names and ages once prompted. Hope this helps 🙂

  5. I already eat at least 50% local, is there a form we need to fill in or do we need to record the food we eat daily somewhere?

    • Hi Cathy, glad to hear you have an appetite for local. Going above and beyond 50% is terrific! There is no form to complete regarding what you are eating each day although personally, I am keeping a journal just to keep me honest!

  6. i live in guysborough county..don’t see our area mentioned…no coordinators available for guysborough/antigonish counties?

    • Hi Carla, Guysborough and Antigonish counties are included under ‘Truro & Northumberland Shores’ – we are organizing our regions as per the NS tourist regions. Your nearest regional coordinator would be Maxine MacLean for Pictou County! If you know of someone in the Guysborough or Antigonish region that would like to become a regional coordinator, please let us know! We are always looking for more folks to join us 🙂

  7. Great idea. As a vegetarian I always go for local first. When I can find it. Supermarkets despite braying they do local sell far too much US produce, especially in season here. I wish there were more outlets spread around. There used to be a great truck from the Valley in Spryfield; it stopped when the owner got ill. I ve asked other big farmers to consider it and get told they re too busy with what they have.

There also are not as many opportunities to get local food everywhere. And for my hour s drive to the downtown markets, I dont get much diversity any more. Why isnt there a list of other markets and outlets for fresh fruits and veg? I d gladly drive up to an hour somewhere else.

I d love to have an agreement to have fresh veggies delivered but live on the Sambro loop and they dont come out here.

Last point from old curmudgeon: i dont do facebook. Every time I wonder if I must surrender the last pretence of my privacy, I read that more folks are withdrawing. Why must you exclude me? I support and advocate for local farmers especially organic ones.

    • Hi there,

Thanks for your feedback! You are right – if you look under ‘Where to eat and buy local’ we have a listing of farmers’ markets, local food retailers & eateries and a great directory of local food outlets compiled by Select Nova Scotia. I hope you found what you were looking for 🙂

And, if you aren’t on Facebook, you can contact your regional coordinator directly! You can find their contact information here: https://nslocalfoodclub.wordpress.com/regional-coordinators/
